New publication: The livelihood value of small isolated forest fragments

Claude Garcia contributed a chapter on "The livelihood value of small isolated forest fragments",  with Laurène Feintrenie, in Chris Kettle and Lian Pin Koh's recent book on Global Forest Fragmentation.

by Swati Negi

"The conservation value of tropical rainforest fragments was established by Turner and Corlett (1996). For biologists and conservationists, the answer is clear: ‘Fragments are better than nothing’ [...]. Here, we reverse the question, exploring their livelihood value, and the impacts that [...] fragmentation will have on the people living in mosaics with forest fragments. How important are these fragments to local people?"

"[...] the process of fragmentation is a problem for forest managers and conservationists but not necessarily for a forest dweller or an agriculturist in a deforestation front".
